I have to write about this today. I am a math teacher and a former Peace Corps volunteer. Living and working in Gabon (Central Africa) and joining the Peace Corps was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. It opened up my eyes and mind and I saw and lived through what relatively few Americans have the opportunity to experience.
I thought about posting this blog because I have been spending so much time on the internet researching, advertising, writing articles for ezines, posting on forums, advertising on traffic exchanges and everything else I can think of to promote my business. I’ve seen my traffic to my websites grow out of control. That’s the point, right? Or is it?
After spending a bit too much time online, I received a call (thankfully) from a Peace Corps friend who is a physician in Colorado now. We’ve been in touch for years (she was my roommate during our training and would make fun of me because I would conjugate verbs in French in my sleep). We had to learn French to teach in that country and I had no knowledge of French, but that is another story. She told me about some volunteer work she is doing in Peru with kids in orphanages and sending over a team of doctors on her own dime.
How amazing is that?? Giving back when you have gained so much from your life experiences. It seems like such an obvious thing to do, but do we do it?
I believe it’s all about finding a balance and I think that is a goal many of us need to strive for. It’s a goal for me. Do something for yourself and then do something for someone else. It makes so much sense.
I need to take a step back and look at all I’ve been given. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for all of us to just stop for a moment and think about what we have been given. After that, maybe we can think of at least one thing we can do to give back. If each of us did one thing that would better our community, especially the kids or elderly people near us, do you think that would make a difference to them?
Wouldn’t be amazing if everyone acted on that?
I’m inspired because I have had it easy (relatively). Let’s look beyond our immediate circle and take an extra step to do something unexpected to make a difference.
I would absolutely love to hear ideas if anyone is inspired by this notion.
